“I’m Gonna Get Ya!” (Part 2 of 2)

HOW TO CONDITION TO GRAB A COLLAR

1) Without saying anything, gently take hold of your dog's collar for a few seconds; then give them a treat immediately after.

2) Do this enough times so your dog starts pushing their collar into your hand hoping for a treat. This can happen very quickly and is very funny to see!

3) When your dog loves "the collar game" add a cue such as "I'm gonna get ya!" before taking the collar.

4) When your dog understands this cue predicts the collar game, start adding the kind of body language that causes dogs to run away from people: first walk straight up to them quickly saying "I'm gonna get ya!" and grab their collar. Second, walk straight up to them and bend in an exaggerated fashion as you say, "I'm gonna get ya!"

Sidenote: Many dogs worry when people bend over them. This is a good way to teach them it's just part of a game. If you are working with a dog that worries, make sure you do everything in such tiny and subtle steps--rewarding after each step-- (Ex: just bending your head rather than bending all the way down, then slowly adding shoulders, etc.) so that he feels happy and confident before continuing.
