OFF SWITCH GAMES

IAny type of game that allows your dog to get excited to a certain degree and then helps them settle, I put in the category of "off switch game."

You can be creative in making up the right game for your dog. For example, some dogs like to be sprayed with a garden hose. This type of work is essential for dogs with impulse control problems and dogs that can't calm themselves after they've become overexcited.

If your dog likes to retrieve, that is a built-in off switch game structure. Once he's returned the toy, at the very least ask him to sit before throwing it again. Some eye contact would be nice too. The game excites the dog; then he must settle and focus before returning to the excitement. The dog should learn the pattern of get excited -- settle -- get excited -- settle.

For reactive dogs who upset easily and can't settle, I also teach them to blink, catch their breath, stretch, and lie on their side; this reinforces their entire body for engaging in calming behavior.

It and is much more powerful for them than just asking for a sit. A dog can still be overexcited while in the sit position; but it's a good start.
