MINIMIZING THE RISK OF RESPIRATORY DISEASE
IN THE TRAVELING HORSE
With the show season around the corner, it is important to look
at ways of decreasing the risk of shipping-related disease in
our equine companions.
Respiratory disease is a common result of the stress and commingling
of horses that occurs during the show season.
Risk factors associated with respiratory disease include stress-related
immune suppression, dehydration, inhalation of dust, pollen,
and mold, and exposure to other ill horses.
Several simple management practices can minimize this risk.
Provide adequate periods of rest prior to and during shipping.
Keep your vaccinations current for rhino and influenza. Ensure
adequate water consumption. It is also very important to provide
adequate trailer airflow while minimizing particulate matter
in the air.
Good luck this show season!
